And now for some penguin news
The idea behind a million penguins is fascinating. Designed to be a collaborative and wiki-based creative writing exercise, hundreds and hundreds of people are adding a little bit towards the story, sometimes only correcting spellings, sometimes completely driving the plot in a new direction. It reminds me slightly of the experimental and dada-esque way of snipping words of a poem or book into seperate entities, and sticking them together in a totally different order.
But does it work? I visited the site after having read about it in The Observer. On first glance, it is slightly confusing. On second glance, it is doubly confusing. I think you have to have been a part of it since day one, or there's no keeping track of the plot or characters.
(Already, only seven or eight chapters in, there is a character list of 64 profiles. An example of the simplest profile, the profile of "A Penguin", reads:
"A Penguin is an intelligent species from the future, trying to save mankind from its own destruction. However, out reach is only limited to dreams as this moment, and only to certain sensitive individuals.")
I think we need a synopsis.
