An Encounter
What makes a thug, a hardened, tough-nut thug? Is a "chav" the same as a thug? How do we best notice the inner thug in those we pass on the street?
All this I was thinking about as I got off the bus and wandered slowly home. I think a thug crossed my way today. Yet I cannot be sure. This "yoof" had a particular glint in his eyes, as if to say "Ahahaha. I'm a thug! Mwuhahaha! Be scared of me!!Die die die."
To emphasise the meaning behind his glint, he wore a hoodie bearing the slogan "Fuck off and die" in glaring capitals. The regulation gold chain was slung almost casually around his neck, accentuating his already prominent adam's apple. He displayed signs of chavishness in the baggy trackie bottoms tucked into his socks, and his hair was non-existent in an inmate-esque manner.
Balanced precariously on his bike, which was of the "in and with it" variety (i.e. no pedals, seat almost scraping along the ground), he whizzed around me, kicking himself off the ground with Adidas trainers. He sneered, and lit a cigarette, an extraordinary accomplishment considering he was still moving, and did so with one hand. He proceeded to circle me a couple of times, then stuck out his lower jaw in a manner which must have taken years to perfect. Slightly intimidated, I hurried away, and made an effort not to meet his eye.
I don't think he realised it, but his whole being was a complete cliché.
Thug: (noun) an aggressive and violent young criminal.
