they spent a hell of a lot of time gathering and preparing food. it was hard to find (a lot of time walking) and hard to get nutrition out of (a lot of time washing, pounding, cooking, etc). also, fetching clean water and maintaining fires takes a lot of time and work.

i've taken some classes that talk a lot about the "environment of evolutionary adaptiveness" (cavepeople times), especially in the context of modern humans. this helps explain why, for example, people get overweight -- we evolved in a time when we had to walk around scrounging for food all day, not in a time full of grocery stores and fast food. so we don't really know how to handle having so much food...we store it up for a famine that never comes, etc.
