I haven't read either of those two, but I've read a bit of Amy Tan's stuff, and find that however interesting the plot seems to be, it often ...fizzles out. A bit like biting into a good substantial [insert vegetarian burger substitute of your choice here], and having it melt away before your eyes. And she always looks so smug on the cover. So there : P

Because the whole biting into a cauliflour cheesebake a having it melt away before my eyes is such a heartbreaking and painful prospect, I'll start with the other one :-D
